Postpartum Hair Loss

Postpartum Hair Loss

I’m a new mum, why is my hair falling out?

On average, we lose about 100 hairs a day but those experiencing hair loss post birth can lose up to 4x as much hair. Like most changes experienced during and post-pregnancy, we can blame our hormones.

So, if you’ve recently given birth and all of a sudden you’re noticing a lot of hair fall, don’t panic! Postpartum hair loss is incredibly common and it’s also only temporary. In fact, to prove to you that it’s common we bet we can even read your mind. If you find yourself asking these questions, we’ve got you covered:

Why was my hair so thick when I was pregnant?

It’s hormones! Again! When pregnant, our hair is luscious and thick because of our increased oestrogen levels. Increased oestrogen levels make our hair stay in the anagen (growth) phase for longer so hair doesn’t fall out as often which gives it more time to grow. Yay!

But, when we’re no longer pregnant, hormone levels return to normal which causes hair shedding. Boo. The juxtaposition of that luscious, thick hair and the shedding responsible for hair thinning post-pregnancy can feel quite dramatic - it can be even more confusing because it’s not immediate but happens around 3-4 months postpartum

Will my hair definitely fall out?

No! Everyone is different and some people with naturally thinner hair note that they didn’t experience hair fall as drastically as their thicker-haired friends. It really depends on the individual.

How long will it last?

Again, it really depends on the individual. For some, this stage of postpartum lasts as little as six weeks. For others, it can last up to 15 months for their hair to get back to their own, unique ‘normal. If you feel particularly worried about it, we would recommend speaking to your doctor for peace of mind but eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and keeping stress at bay will all help.

How can I prevent it?

Because your hair will naturally get back to its old self, you don’t have to do anything. BUT if you want to try and minimise the shed or do what you can to shorten the time it takes to come back, Bouf is the routine for you.

Our Flouf Factor Growth Tonic works to support the hairs natural growth cycle to help visibly reduce hair fall with its patented FGF5 hair tech and powerful natural ingredients. Most users notice visibly less hair fall after 30 days. The ingredients are well-tolerated, widely used in cosmetics and not commonly restricted during pregnancy. However, because you can never be too cautious, we always recommend consulting your healthcare provider before use.

Nourishing hair with our Flouf Factor Growth™ Shampoo and Conditioner protects hair from environmental and heat damage while working to prevent breakage and increase shine.

Our Flouf Factor Growth™ supplements – like most dietary supplements – are not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but we always recommend talking to your doctor about any of the ingredients in anything from the Bouft range to be sure it’s a good fit for your hair concerns.

You can tell them that all Bouf products are free from phthalates, phosphates, silicone, and sulfates. It’s also cruelty free, and safe for coloured hair, extensions and keratin treated hair.
